Bud Powell – The Amazing Bud Powell (Vol.1) (1951/2013) FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz| Time – 26:35 minutes| 901 MB| Genre: Jazz Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks| @ Blue Note Records Providing a healthy dose of pianist Bud Powell at his best, this classic album combines sessions recorded in 1949 and 1951 with two different lineups. Trumpeter Fats Navarro and tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins appear on the four tunes Powell recorded with a quintet in 1949. The other four songs, taken from the 1951 session, feature bassist Curly Russell and Max Roach on drums. Culled from Bud Powell’s first two Amazing Bud Powell volumes, this LP features eight highlights from the bop pianist’s inspired 1949-1951 run at Blue Note. Complementing earlier triumphs for Verve, Powell displays his frenetically inspired keyboard approach on the self-penned classics “Wail,” “Bouncing With Bud,” and “Un Poco Loco”; he sounds equally fresh tackling such venerable covers as “Over the Rainbow,” Dizzy Gillespie’s “A Night in Tunisia,” and Charlie Parker’s “Ornithology.” And while such omissions as “Dance of the Infidels” and “Parisian Thoroughfare” are hard not to miss, there’s enough here to keep newcomers busy until they inevitably pick up the complete Blue Note set. Plus, one gets a chance to hear the likes of Fats Navarro, Sonny Rollins, and Max Roach in top form.
